Frank Sinatra & Count Basie

Composer and lyricist Frank Loesser wrote five Broadway musicals and 700 songs over the course of his career. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of Loesser’s birth (June 29) and the 60th anniversary of Guys & Dolls’ opening on Broadway (November 24).

Guys & Dolls, arguably Loesser’s best-known stage work, featured the songs “Luck Be A Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “If I Were A Bell” and “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.” The 9-time Tony winner has been staged on Broadway four times, and the 1955 film adaptation that starred Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons cemented its place in popular culture.

The below clip of “Luck Be A Lady” is quite a treat: Frank Sinatra fronts the Count Basie Orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones.
