Ben Kweller-Go Fly A Kite

I really started getting into Ben Kweller with the release of his previous album, Changing Horses. I was hoping he would continue the alt-country sound on his new album Go Fly A Kite, but it was not to be. This album seems like it falls right between alt-country and his older rock albums, which is not necessarily a bad place to be. The first single off the album, “Jealous Girl“, tells a story of seeing a friend being pulled away by a jealous girlfriend, and ultimately tearing apart whatever friendship there was and the hurt it causes afterwards. One of my favorite songs on the album, “Miss You“, tells of an old flame that the writer still has feelings for, and is having a hard time accepting that she doesn’t care anymore and has moved on. Loss seems to be an overriding theme on this album, and while it may not have the same sound I enjoyed on Changing Horses, the lyrics are still as strong as ever here, which shouldn’t come as a surprise coming from Ben Kweller (sometimes called the “next Dylan“). I would definitely recommend this album to any Kweller fan, but it’s probably not a good starting point for a new fan (Sha Sha or his self titled should fill that need). You will most likely see this somewhere in my top albums list at the end of the year, but it seems to lack the lasting impact to put it near the top of that list.
