Top albums of 2012

Posted January 3, 2013 By admin

Well, another year has come and gone, and it’s time to post my favorite albums of the past year. 2012 seemed to lack a lot of depth in terms of quality albums. There are a few great ones at the top of the list, but once you get past the first 6 or 7, the quality starts to fade fast. That’s not to say they are bad albums, but there just weren’t many that wowed me this year. I will say this though, there were definitely a lot of great songs released this year, so keep a look out for that list coming in the next couple days. Here’s the list of my top albums from 2012.

Honorable mentions:
Sixpence None The Richer- Lost In Translation
Fiona Apple- The Idler Wheel…
Justin Bieber- Believe
R. Kelly- Write Me Back
DMX- Undisputed

 10. Kevin Coster & Modern West- Famous For Killing Each Other

Aby Wolf-A. Wolf & Her Claws

Posted December 1, 2012 By admin

Aby Wolf might not be a name you recognize right away, but chances are you’ve heard her voice. She has sung with some of the most prominent members of the Minnesota music scene, from Dessa to Brother Ali. Her new album, A. Wolf & Her Claws is one of the more intriguing released of the year in my opinion. It blends techno, hip hop and opera, and if that sounds like a funny mix, trust me, it sounds funny typing it. But, she makes it work beautifully on this album. Aby has one of the most diverse and beautiful voices in music, and she lets it show on this album. Songs like “All This Time” and “Alice” have an almost haunting atmosphere that grab your attention from the first note, and demand your attention. “Zero to 60” is full out techno, which isn’t usually my style, but again, that voice conquers whatever distaste I might have for the genre and makes an enjoyable listen. This album might not be on a lot of people’s radar, but it’s one of my favorite albums of the year, a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an album that is outside of the box and crosses multiple genres.

  • Alice
  • Eyes On Me

Aby Wolf-Live At The Cedar

Posted April 28, 2011 By admin

Check out more photos from the show here.

I’d been wanting to see an Aby Wolf show for quite a while and I was finally able to in February. She can often be found singing harmonies with Dessa, and also has her own solo album, titled Sweet Prudence. This, like the Dessa show was a commissioned show that featured a lot of new material.

Aby Wolf (+Opener)
The Cedar
Minneapolis, MN
2-20-11

-Audience Recording using Zoom H2 rear internal mics >SD Card>PC>Adobe Audition>CD Wave Editor (split tracks)>TLH>FLAC Level 8
-“A “MN Gneiss” recording”
-Feel free to re-master, share on any other site, convert to MP3, just never ever sell it. Also, if you like this show, why not support the artist by buying their music?

In partnership with the Jerome Foundation, The Cedar has commissioned seven local artists to compose, practice, and perform new music pieces in collaboration with other local musicians. This project drives The Cedar’s vision to support emerging artists.

This evening, a musician best known for her haunting vocals, Aby Wolf will perform her electronic-based dance project in collaboration with Jesse Whitney (Dance Band), Linnea Mohn (Rogue Valley) and Joey Van Phillips (Mystery Palace).
