Top Albums of 2017

Posted January 1, 2018 By admin

Another year has come and gone, and the time has come to look back and put together a list of my favorite albums released in 2017. While there wasn’t really an album that blew me away like last year (You Want It Darker in particular), there were definitely a lot of good, solid albums that made choosing one over another harder this year. I listened to a total of 244 albums that were released in 2017, and narrowed it down to my top 15 in order. I also included a few in no particular order that didn’t make the cut but still deserve to be mentioned. I will also be posting my favorite songs from the past year in the next couple days, including my first effort at making a Spotify playlist to include (stepping into the 21st Century finally).

Honorable mentions:

15. Benjamin Booker – Witness

14. Ane Brun – Leave Me Breathless

13. Malik Turner – Hip Hop Homicide (1992-1994)

Erik Koskinen-America Theatre

Posted April 5, 2014 By admin

Erik Koskinen-America Theatre

Wow, it’s been longer than I thought since I posted here last. A combination of being busy and nothing really new to write about lately led to the absence. Hopefully things will pick up more now, there are some good releases on the horizon. I will start my 2014 album reviews with Erik Koskinen’s America Theatre. This was the first album he had released since I discovered him, so I’ve been looking forward to this for a while. America Theatre definitely has more of an edge than his last album Keep It To Yourself, both musically and lyrically. A lot of these songs comment on the state of America, both current and past. Songs such as “Boomtown“, which in my mind seems to be about a city that goes from a small rural town into a big city, and kind of ruins that small town feel. My favorite track on the album is one I had heard a few times live and was really looking forward to hearing a studio version. “Slow Burn” is a slow bluesy song that basically tells the story of life, in a few different parts. The first part is from the eyes of a child, the second from the eyes of a soldier, the third from the eyes of lovers/broken love (either one seems to fit), and the fourth part a combination of a few different characters. It’s easily the best track on this album, and it’s a great ending track to an album.
